This week Letchworth Hockey Club were proud to be able to host the very first Herts & Beds walking hockey festival.
Walking hockey is seeing a growth in popularity and last season Letchworth Hockey Club launched its walking hockey team to great response. We have been delighted to promote this new phase of our sport and expand the accessibility of the game to new and existing members.
The number of local clubs in our area has been slowly increasing and this week we were able to come together with walking hockey teams from Chiltern, Bedford (who fielded 2 teams) and Welwyn alongside our 2 Letchworth teams for a day of walking hockey - over 40 players took part with ages ranging from 30 to 70 years young.
The aim of the day was to have fun while being active and we certainly achieved that. It was a roaring success; the sun came out, lots of lovely hockey was played followed by tea and cakes and a drink or two in the bar which raised money for the MacMillan Cancer support coffee morning.
As a player from Chiltern remarked “ It was fun, competitive and friendly what more could you ask” and our own Emma Payne commented “This is what I’ve missed, team spirit and the camaraderie”. Bedford Hockey Club will be looking to host a follow-up event for the teams later in the season which we all look forward to.
Walking hockey is low impact so is suitable for all ages, as well as being a great way to return to hockey after a break or injury, or as a way into the sport for new players looking to get in to mainstream hockey.
