Earlier this month, LHCs very own Deborah Wren and the England ladies over 70s team set off on a jet setting trip to New Zealand to take part in this year's hockey masters World Cup. They joined 128 other teams in the 10 day tournament that saw nearly 400 matches being played across different age groups for both men and women's squads; this was no small event!
The WO70's journey to the final saw them sailing through their first two matches with 7-0 and 6-0 victories, before facing difficult matches against New Zealand which they won 3-1, and Australia which they drew 2-2 with the help of a Deb Wren goal flicked over the oncoming keeper into the net.
In the final they faced Australia for the second time, and this time they righted the errors from the first game. The score was even at full time taking the game to penalty flicks. Once again both teams were tied after the first round so it went to sudden death. 7 flicks later and after a hard fought final unfortunately it was an Australia win. The overcast weather reflected the initial feeling among the players after such a difficult final game but a silver medal is an amazing achievement and goes to show that age really is just a number; massive congratulations to the team!
