Ladies 4s vs West Herts 4

Letchworth went into this 'we need to win' fixture with a positive mindset and determination to put in a strong performance. The afternoon got off to an unusual start, with the opposition initially taking to the pitch with a few missing numbers from their shirts, resulting in a brief stoppage before play could properly get underway.

Once settled, Letchworth showed promising intent. There were several well-worked passages of play and some excellent shots on goal that kept the pressure firmly on the opposition. The team looked lively and composed in the opening exchanges — although in true form, Sue took an early tumble within the first five minutes, setting a familiar tone for the afternoon!

The umpiring decisions proved to be a talking point throughout. There were moments of frustration as strong tackles on Letchworth players — sometimes involving three opposition players at once — were waved on without sanction. Despite the growing sense of injustice, the team continued to battle and create chances.

Cerys was rightly named Player of the Match for her performance, working tirelessly as left half. A special mention also goes to Laura, making her first appearance for the side. She impressed with confident play, strong tackling, and excellent positioning — a hugely encouraging debut.

The game’s deciding moment came after Sue was taken out in the build-up to the opposition’s second goal, a challenge that many felt warranted more attention. The decision stood, and they capitalised to extend their lead. Frustrations understandably grew, and Letchworth lost their composure slightly following what felt like a series of harsh and inconsistent decisions.

Throughout the game had a number of good chances that we sadly failed to convert and the bouncy pitch played to the home teams advantage.

On the bright side, at least the rain stayed away, Sue only fell once, Gemma's Fitbit stayed strong for the whole game, Sarah didn't repremand herself loudly on the pitch as much as she often does, we showed good play in all areas and we finished the game still with 11 players on the pitch — sometimes you have to take the small victories!

Team spirits were lifted post-match with a lovely Indian meal shared among a fantastic team. Win or lose, the camaraderie remains unbeaten!

Plenty of positives to take forward, and with the attitude and effort shown, it’s onward and upward for next week.
