Match Report: Cheshunt vs. Letchworth
The highly anticipated clash between Cheshunt and Letchworth ended in a lively 3-3 draw, filled with thrilling moments, running commentary, and a bit of slapstick comedy, all under the dreary, cold, and wet conditions!
Both teams braved the elements for a tightly contested first half, which finished at 1-1. Gary Putnam got the ball rolling for Letchworth striking from a short corner that took a cheeky deflection off the Cheshunt keeper. However, a determined and physical Cheshunt quickly leveled the score from a short corner, deflecting it past the keeper, keeping the crowd on their toes. The other highlight of the half was Letchworth international player Graham Scholtz demonstrating he was still in touch with his inner child by executing an excellent tackle whilst sliding across the floor on his knees like a 4 year old at a birthday party.
A half time team talk from the resident South African on eating cement and getting stuck in seemed to work its magic and the second half brought even more excitement! Following some lovely passages of play and posession hockey, a brilliant piece of teamwork had Richie P set up Mark Shadbolt who finished with style to give Letchworth a 2-1 lead. Cheshunt came again with another short corner to level the score 2-2, despite the strongest protestations and robust discussion with the umpire by some of the Letchworth team. It was Pearce himself who got in on the action next, scoring a third and sending the sidelines into a frenzy.
At this point Letchworths Barcelona-esque skills which created their second half goals had run out and they resorted to playing through the middle. This resulted in Cheshunt turning the pressure on the counter and then being given yet another short, more protestations and intellectual conversation over interpretation of the rules took place to no avail. Cheshunt slotted home their third with the scoring opposition striker directing some choice language towards our own innocent keeper Kev who had been on his best behaviour all game…
The last throw of the dice saw Graham Scholtz demonstrating he had indeed eaten the aforementioned cement as he cleaned out an opposition striker, whether he got the ball is unclear but he must have as no card was shown. With that the match ended 3-3.
Thomas Presland took home Man of the Match on his debut, proving that even under the worst weather, he could shine like a beacon of hope in defence. Captain Will P earned DotD having made the rookie mistake of arriving at the wrong pitch! An easy mistake to make and one that will surely be quickly forgotten.
Honourable mentions go to Graham Scholtz and Kev McNamara who entertained everyone with their witty commentary on the umpires fine decisions. They deftly avoided any cards, all while adding their own thoughts on the match, which the officials very much appreciated.
Onwards and upwards to next weeks encounter with Blueharts!
