Strong start, unlucky finish — Letchworth 0, Harpenden 1
First game of the season and what a start! The girls held strong, with the midfield and forwards pressing high and keeping most of the game in the attacking half. Lottie, Jo, Sarah, and Amy made great runs down the baseline, winning several short corners, but the ball just wouldn’t find the back of the net. The link-up play through the middle with Bekky, Lois, and Abbie kept the momentum flowing and had Harpenden pinned back for long spells.
At the back, Chloe, Kayley, Gemma, and Izzy worked tirelessly, breaking down play and setting us back on the attack with some classy passes. Special mention to Izzy (aka Chappers) — our well-deserved Woman of the Match — for bossing centre mid, snapping back into defence when needed, and never missing a beat. The defensive unit looked much more confident on the switch, with strong comms and organisation throughout.
When Harpenden did break through, Veda was ready — pulling off some great saves, including a stunning sliding block at the post that kept us right in the game.
And of course, our Muppet of the Match goes to Jade — for first getting lost in the men’s changing rooms, and then pulling off the most questionable backline switch of the day. Classic.
Final score: 1–0 to Harpenden, but it really didn’t reflect how strong we were! This game showed we’ve got a solid foundation to build on, and plenty more goals to come!
