Club History
Letchworth Hockey Club was formed following a meeting of local hockey players at The Anchor Pub, Hitchin on 5 April 1960 and started playing with 2 Men’s teams at the Baldock Road Recreation Ground. Subsequently they moved to Letchworth Corner in Muddy Lane to join Letchworth Cricket Club and help justify funding for the building of a new Clubhouse. In 1974, the Ladies section was formed and Ladies changing facilities along with Squash Courts were built at Letchworth Corner.
The Hockey and Cricket Clubs moved to Whitethorn Lane in 1996 and with major grants from Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, The Football Trust and The National Lottery, a new Astroturf Hockey Pitch was laid and the Clubhouse refurbished to provide a showpiece sports facility in North Herts. Since 1975 the Club has with an increasing number of Adult teams playing at County, Regional and National level as well as a flourishing set of Junior teams.
In the early 2000s, the club’s performance hockey setup received considerable investment, benefiting from great local coaching and facilities. In 2004/2005 our Ladies 1st XI joined the Women’s National Premier League 3 for the first time in our Club’s history. The Men’s 1st XI have were champions of Div 2 South 2007/2008 and Div 1 in 2008/2009, rising to join Premier B where they played for many seasons.

The Club celebrated the 50th Anniversary of its foundation in 1960 over a weekend in March 2010 and comprised a weekend of festivities at the Letchworth Corner Sports Club, Whitethorn Lane with Men’s and Ladies Representative Hockey Games. It was also an opportunity for Life Members, Vice Presidents and previous members and players to join the celebrations.
Letchworth HC gained accreditation under Clubs First from the England Hockey Association – a great endorsement of the club setup.
The club hosted it’s 60th birthday celebration (a year late due to the pandemic!) in August 2021. With promotions from a number of teams, high quality coaching and ever-improving facilities, the club is the strongest it has ever been on the pitch . . .and remains as social as it has ever been off it!
